21 Spontaneous Self-Date Ideas for the Single or Booed Up Millennial Woman

self date ideas

Calling all my single ladies! Are you looking for ways to treat yourself on a Saturday night? New activities to do when all of your (taken) friends are maxed out on their calendar next week?

First of all, take a deep breath. It’s OK to be single, and the idea of ‘’self-dating’’ is certainly not new. That’s why we have created a list of 21 self-date ideas for you to let loose and enjoy yourself like those taken gals.

Discalimer: But, if you are taken and just need some “me time” every now and then, these ideas are for you too.

1. Watch the latest blockbuster film

This is one of the most popular activities to embark on when you’re single because of the amount of self involved. Think about it. All you have to do is walk into the theater and watch the film. It’s just that simple. And in the end you won’t have to worry about sharing snacks or debating on whether the plot is a remake of that so-and-so flick back in the ‘80s.

2. Join an art club (or do it yourself)

The art of self expression is an enjoyable activity for anyone who takes pride in saying the table or dresser in your house looks the way it does because of your crafts(woman)ship. Heading over the Michael’s beforehand or skimming through Instagram photos for inspiration is also a great way to outline your weekend project.

3. Read a book outdoors

Reading a book in a park or local coffee shop is a very different experience to simply sitting in your favorite lounge chair at home. The next time the weather is nice and warm out, maybe consider taking Fitzgerald or Orwell with you during your next outing.

4. Hit the malls (or thrift store)

Shopping can also be therapeutic! Just be sure to have a set budget in plan so you don’t overspend.

5. Participate in a yoga class

Not only will you meet new friends, but you will also feel extremely relaxed!

6. Participate in a meditation class

In relation to the previous, this is another great opportunity to meet new friends with similar interests.

7. Go out for a long drive

Believe it or not, sometimes driving along the coast can be a grand experience—especially if you have a specific destination at the very end of it all to look towards.

8. Go to a pet store

Especially on adoption weekends! If you don’t have a pet, or currently looking for a furry companion, looking and petting the kittens and puppies can be very therapeutic.

9. Lounge by the beach

Sometimes packing your own lunch and basking in the rays of the sun is all you need to get work and personal related tension off your chest.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to bring a book or cold drink!

10. Go to a museum

Not only will you learn something new, but you are bound to stumble upon likeminded individuals who may be up for a little conversation.

Pro tip: Visit Balboa Park in San Diego—the perfect place to exercise social interaction and your brain.

11. Go biking

Trails that are longer than 4 or 5 miles are great for weekends and those early summer days. This also gets you off your phone and more involved in nature.

12. Go running

Not only will you lose a few pounds, but running is also great for boosting your self confidence, ego, and goal setting abilities.

13. Attend an open mic or jazz concert

Another bonus? You will leave with plenty of stories to tell!

14. Take yourself out for breakfast before heading to work

Dining out alone is always a good idea! Who says that going to Denny’s is fit for only two?

15. Go and watch the sunset

If you live in a coastal town, this is an absolute must!

16. Go to the spa

Pampering yourself becomes more of a necessity as we age. Work, family, internal conflict—if you keep missing those red lights to stop and catch a breath, eventually your body will fall victim to fatigue.

17. Go to a plant nursery or botanical garden

This must be on your list if you’re a plant or nature lover!

18. Go hiking with your dog

Your furry friend will thank you for allowing him to tag along. It is, however, very important to keep extra bottles and a bowl in handy so everyone can stay hydrated.

19. Watch an old Hollywood film

Wet outside? Hit the couch with Rita Hayworth, Grace Kelly, Fred Astaire, Gregory Peck, or Laurence Olivier!

20. Support your farmer’s market

Most farmer’s markets are open on the weekend. So if your fridge is looking empty, or if you’re currently in longing to explore the live music, fresh flowers, and organic produce, this is your next destination!

21. Go to a local café and people watch

That’s right. ‘’People watching’’ is actually a thing. Before mobile phones and social media, this was what many people occasionally found themselves doing while out in town. Just be sure you choose your preferred spot wisely. A ‘’bad’’ example to do this would be your local drugstore or children’s park.
